Feb. 24, 2025 - WeRide (Nasdaq: WRD), a global leader in autonomous driving technology, announced approval to launch its latest generation Robotaxi, the GXR for fully unmanned paid autonomous ride-hailing services in Beijing. GXR is WeRide’s second Robotaxi model to achieve fully driverless commercial operations in Beijing. This marks GXR’s first large-scale commercial deployment in China, following its launch on the Uber platform in Abu Dhabi last December.

The service area spans key regions within the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, including high-speed railway stations. Beyond urban roads, GXR is also approved for commercial operations on highways, including routes to and from Beijing Daxing International Airport.

On October 15, 2024, WeRide officially launched the new generation Robotaxi, GXR. In just over four months, the company has rapidly progressed from product launch to fully unmanned commercial operations, once again demonstrating "WeRide speed" in the commercial deployment of autonomous driving.

During the test phase, two autonomous cars with WeRide technology will be in service. At the start of operations, up to four cars will be deployed, offering residents the opportunity to experience this innovative mobility solution. This fleet of autonomous vehicles is expected to begin operations in the second quarter of 2025 and will operate in a fully unmanned mode for up to five years. The fleet is expected to expand with up to eight additional autonomous vehicles in 2026. The fleet will be further expanded in future phases. 

The first automated vehicles will be deployed in the Furttal Region in Switzerland. Pilot operations will begin in Otelfingen, Boppelsen, Hüttikon, and Dänikon, with plans to extend the test area to Buchs, Dällikon, and Regensdorf.

Residents of these areas will be able to book the autonomous vehicles by an app supplied by ioki, a well-established provider of on-demand mobility solutions in Europe.

In Switzerland, trains serve as the main arteries connecting major cities and towns. According to Federal Office of Transport (FOT), on average, Swiss residents take the train about 70 times a year, the highest rate in Europe. However, suburban areas face limited transportation options. SBB, one of the project investors, was established in 1902 and is Switzerland’s state-owned railway company with a 3,000-kilometer network covering the entire country. The Canton of Zurich, Switzerland's most populous canton, is the second-largest investor. STL, the project manager, is dedicated to exploring and promoting innovative mobility solutions to address urbanization challenges. Leveraging WeRide's internationally leading autonomous driving technology implementation capabilities, the parties will work together to expand Switzerland's intelligent transportation network.

This cooperation project in Switzerland is the third project WeRide has launched in Europe within just eight months. A week ago, WeRide announced the launch of Europe’s first commercial autonomous minibus project at Zurich Airport. During the 2024 French Open, WeRide partnered with Renault to provide the only L4 autonomous shuttle service at the event in Paris.

The selection of WeRide as the technology supplier for the pilot project in Switzerland not only reaffirms the versatility of the WeRide One autonomous driving technology platform and its adaptability to different products but also signifies that WeRide's technology, products, and services are meeting with great interest in Europe, providing a solid foundation for broader international commercial deployment.


WeRide Chosen Technology Supplier for New Pilot Project on Autonomous Driving in Switzerland 

Zurich, Jan. 09 – WeRide Inc. (NASDAQ: WRD), a global leader in autonomous driving technology, today announced the collaboration with Flughafen Zürich AG in a pilot project that aims to deploy its Robobus autonomous shuttle service at the airfield of Zurich Airport. This marks a significant milestone in bringing autonomous mobility solutions to one of Europe's major aviation hubs and builds upon WeRide's successful European operations, including its recent autonomous shuttle service at Roland-Garros during the 2024 French Open.

The WeRide Robobus, which can accommodate up to nine passengers, will be one of the first commercial autonomous bus shuttle projects within an airport in Europe. It will serve airport employees along a dedicated route inside the airport perimeter, connecting the employee entrance at gate 101 to the work places at gate 130. The route is clearly separate from flight operations, and does not cross any airplane taxiways, making it an ideal place to use autonomous vehicles for the first time, while making it easier for employees to commute within the airport grounds. Tests will begin operations in the first quarter of 2025, complementing existing airside shuttle services for airport staff.

With the aim of developing similar pioneering mobility solutions, Flughafen Zürich AG is working closely with other airports – such as Brussels and Amsterdam – that are also testing technologies for autonomous vehicles. Before the start of pilot Robobus operations, WeRide’s autonomous Robotaxi completed route mapping at Zurich Airport.

Zurich Airport is located at the foot of the Alps, presenting severe challenges to autonomous driving technology due to its complex operational environment and climatic conditions: the airport's aviation-grade safety requirements are extremely high, with strict regulations on the safety and standards of internal operational vehicle systems. The operational route passes through areas with narrow roads, high pedestrian traffic, and a large number of randomly parked vehicles. The airport has special vehicles such as tow trucks, mobile boarding bridge vehicles, luggage transport vehicles, and large snow removal vehicles interacting on the roads. The airport also features high-intensity special electromagnetic signal environment, and the need to cope with alternating weather conditions from sunny, to rainy, or snowy within the same day, as well as extreme weather including strong winds and low temperatures. WeRide aim to overcome all of these extreme challenges with its strong technical capabilities and rich implementation experience, providing Zurich Airport with a mature and reliable autonomous driving solution.

The Zurich Airport service follows the successful deployment in Paris, where Robobus provided efficient shuttle services for VIPs and media across a five-kilometer route during the French Open, as part of an ongoing collaboration with Renault Group to promote low-carbon public transportation solutions across Europe.

The Robobus deployment leverages WeRide's advanced autonomous driving technology, which has undergone extensive testing and validation across more than 30 cities in seven countries. The initial phase at Zurich Airport will include a safety driver on board, with the option to transition to remote monitoring operations in subsequent phases, all supervised by a dedicated operations center at the airport.

“During a tender, one of the leading companies in the automated mobility sector, WeRide, was selected as the technology provider. WeRide possesses a fully developed and thoroughly tested technology, meets all of the legal and safety requirements in place at Zurich Airport and guarantees that it will meet the data protection requirements set out,” Flughafen Zürich AG said in its announcement of the service.

In December, WeRide’s Robobus inaugurated the commercial operation of the Tianhe BRT autonomous shuttle line in Guangzhou, China, in collaboration with Guangzhou Bus Group, offering a new, efficient, and convenient option for nighttime commuters along a nine-kilometer route. Robobus service was also launched Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore in June, 2024. The shuttle route for hotel guests and tourists, jointly launched by WeRide, Resorts World Sentosa, and EZ Buzz Pte. Ltd, spans 1.2 kilometers with four stops along the way, taking approximately 12 minutes to complete.

Zurich Airport will work with several partners to ensure smooth operation of the service.

WeRide Expands European Presence with Autonomous Robobus Shuttle Deployment at Zurich Airport

This line marks the first autonomous shuttle to navigate the BRT system in Guangzhou's city center and operate at night in a first-tier Chinese city, offering a new, efficient, and convenient option for nighttime commuters.

The Tianhe BRT autonomous shuttle line (BRT Wenyuan - BRT Tangxia Village Loop) commences at BRT Wenyuan Station, passing through several commercial plazas, communities, and transportation hubs over a nine-kilometer route. Key stops include BRT Chebei Station, BRT Dongpu Town Station, and BRT Zhucun Station, before looping back to the starting point. Operating from 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with a single nightly trip, the service supports Yang Cheng Tong card payments, mobile ride codes, and NFC payments, enhancing the nighttime commuting experience for residents.

As an integral part of Guangzhou's city center BRT system, the BRT Wenyuan - BRT Tangxia Village Loop bolsters the connectivity of the Guangzhou BRT network, effectively streamlining the city’s public transportation “capillaries.” The line connects with Metro Line 4, Line 13, and other routes, and connects with the operational BRT Xiayuan - BRT Wenyuan line, enabling citizens to traverse the Tianhe and Huangpu districts aboard WeRide Robobus.

The launch of the Guangzhou BRT Tianhe autonomous shuttle line is another significant milestone that underscores WeRide’s commitment to commercialization and leveraging technology for public benefit. It further expands the application scenarios for Robobus, diversifies nighttime travel options, and demonstrates the robust capabilities of L4 autonomous driving technology in complex urban environments. Since late 2023, WeRide, in collaboration with Guangzhou Bus Group, has deployed 50 Robobuses, rolling out 10 commercial autonomous shuttle lines, including Guangzhou International Bio Island Line 1 and Line 2, Knowledge City Yongjingwan Convenience Line, Guangzhou Tower Line, and Pazhou Loop.

Currently, WeRide Robobus operates in 30 cities globally, including Guangzhou, Beijing, Wuxi, Nanjing, Dalian, Zhuhai, and Singapore. Its safe, comfortable, and intelligent services have become an integral part of daily life for local residents.

WeRide Robobus Launches the Tianhe BRT Autonomous Shuttle Line, Rolling into Guangzhou City Center

On December 3, 2024, H.E. Fahad Abdulrahman AlJalajel, Minister of Health of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, led a delegation to visit WeRide (Nasdaq: WRD), a global leader in autonomous driving technology. The delegation was warmly received by Jennifer Li, CFO and Head of International Business at WeRide, along with other company representatives. The two parties engaged in in-depth discussions about WeRide’s international expansion strategy, with a particular focus on its progress and potential in Saudi Arabia. H.E. Fahad Abdulrahman AlJalajel extended a warm welcome to WeRide’s entry into the Saudi market and expressed keen interest in deepening collaboration on technology development, talent cultivation, R&D and manufacturing localization.

The following day, H.E. Fahad Abdulrahman AlJalajel and the delegation visited WeRide’s R&D and operations center in Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (BDA). They experienced rides in WeRide’s Robotaxi and Robobus and examined its Robosweeper. During the test rides, H.E. Fahad Abdulrahman AlJalajel highly praised the “seasoned driver-like” performance of WeRide’s technology and expressed strong interest in deploying these advanced autonomous driving solutions to support the healthcare industry in Saudi Arabia.

As Saudi Arabia's Minister of Health and Chairman of the Ministerial Committee for Traffic Safety (MCTS), H.E. Fahad Abdulrahman AlJalajel stressed the transformative potential of autonomous driving technologies in advancing Saudi Arabia’s transportation system and invited WeRide to collaborate in shaping the future of mobility in the region.

H.E. Fahad Abdulrahman AlJalajel further emphasized that Saudi Arabia’s six major medical cities present ideal deployment scenarios for autonomous driving solutions. WeRide’s Robosweeper, Robobus, and Robovan can be rapidly deployed to enhance public service efficiency and create tangible benefits for local communities.

WeRide has made significant progress in Saudi Arabia. In September 2022, WeRide debuted at the Global AI Summit in Riyadh, where it announced a partnership with the Saudi Company for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) and successfully launched Saudi Arabia’s first dynamic Robobus route for demonstration. In December of the same year, during the inaugural China-Arab States Summit, WeRide, as a representative of Chinese autonomous driving enterprises, signed a project cooperation agreement with Ajlan & Bros Holding.

In October 2023, WeRide was invited to participate in the 7th Future Investment Initiative (FII) Summit in Saudi Arabia. As the sole autonomous driving service provider performing demo runs at the event, WeRide’s Robobus offered VIP shuttle services at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center, delivering three days of dynamic demonstrations and serving over 100 distinguished attendees.

The Saudi delegation’s visit further strengthens WeRide’s foundation for deploying autonomous mobility solutions in Saudi Arabia. WeRide will soon launch its Robosweeper in the region. Looking ahead, WeRide will remain committed to technological innovation and open collaboration, and leverage its advanced autonomous driving technologies to accelerate the transformation of Saudi Arabia’s urban mobility and public services.
